Chapter Discussions: Twilight, Chapter Six – Scary Stories

It’s way past time for another Chapter Discussion over Twilight. This time we are on Chapter Six, where Bella meets Jacob for the first time at La Push beach. These questions are from the Twilight Lexicon forums, created by user Alphie.

1. What was your initial thought about the fact that Charlie told Bella Goat Rock wasn’t a good place for camping? Did you wonder what else Edward might be doing up there?

The first time I read the book, I thought it was a little weird. I didn’t know what he could be doing in such a bear infested place (but now I know why he brought Emmett!), and I thought that perhaps he had lied about where he was going.

2. How did you feel about Lauren and her open dislike of Bella?

I hated Lauren because I didn’t know what her problem was. Plus, it sucks when people are mean to you for seemingly no reason, or things that aren’t your fault, so I hated her on behalf of Bella.

3. What was your first impression of Jacob Black? Did you like him? Did you get the sense that he was interested in Bella as more than a friend?

I thought Jacob was nice enough. I knew from listening to other people talk about the books that he was going to be an important character in the series because Bella would have to choose between him and Edward. I really didn’t see how that was possible, how such a thing could actually happen. I was more intrigued by his stories than anything at this point.

4. Why do you suppose Jacob didn’t believe the legends of his people as readily as Bella did?

Jacob didn’t believe because he’s never had reason to. He grew up being told these were just legends, and he’d never had any proof or reason to think differently. Bella certainly did. Jacob’s story was the only thing that fit with what she knew so far about Edward.

5. Given the fact that the stories about the “cold ones” were true, did you fully expect to see werewolves in the future books?

I knew they were already there, but since I’m a little slow to things like this in books, I don’t think I would have actually thought of that until it happened.

I’m re-reading Twilight, and I’m on this chapter right now. I forgot how many little hints and how much foreshadowing there actually is in these first few chapters. Even though I know what’s going to happen, I still get excited when I read them. I’m hoping to get New Moon soon (my copy was loaned out and never returned (*cough* Kaitlin*cough*) so I can go from Twilight to New Moon with no lag time. No waiting in between Twilight saga books = a happy Whitley.

-Whitley

Hello everyone. I’m back at home for now, but I leave again tomorrow. This work project is nearly done, we hope, so I should be around a lot more.

Here are my answers to these questions.

1. What was your initial thought about the fact that Charlie told Bella Goat Rock wasn’t a good place for camping? Did you wonder what else Edward might be doing up there?

My initial thought was that Edward was going to be hunting. I already knew that Edward was a vampire because Whitley had told me before we even saw the movie.

2. How did you feel about Lauren and her open dislike of Bella?

I thought Lauren was a bitch and was glad she wasn’t in the movie.

3. What was your first impression of Jacob Black? Did you like him? Did you get the sense that he was interested in Bella as more than a friend?

I was sort of indifferent to him really. I was more interested in the story he told Bella because it was a dark story and I like those.

4. Why do you suppose Jacob didn’t believe the legends of his people as readily as Bella did?

Bella already knew something was up with that Edward Cullen character , from what she witnessed before. Jacob had no point of reference about Edward, so he had to reason to believe them.

5. Given the fact that the stories about the “cold ones” were true, did you fully expect to see werewolves in the future books?

I already knew that too (because of Whitley), but if I hadn’t been told, I probably would have expected it.

You guys can answer these questions yourselves in the comments, we would love to read your point of view. If you decide to answer them on your own blog, please let us know so we can link you.

Also, don’t forget to vote on our poll here so we can find out if you would enter in a contest to win free Twilight stuff or not. We are keeping the voting open two weeks so everyone who wants to vote for it will hopefully get a chance.

Hopefully I will be back home for good soon. I have more haikus coming soon too.

Chapter Disscussions: Twilight, Chapter Five – Blood Type

So it has been pretty much forever since we have done one of these, since Jeremy has been gone for his job and everything. Thankfully, he gets to come home on weekends, and the first thing I told him when I picked him up yesterday was, “We need to do a blog post ASAP.” (Well, maybe not the first thing I said, I’m not a totally bad girlfriend, I don’t think)

Anyway, we are now on to Chapter Five, and this is another one of my favorite parts of the book. This is the chapter where the blood typing experiment in Biology happens, causing Bella to nearly faint and guess who rescues her? You guessed it, Edward Cullen.

This is one of my favorite chapters because I can totally relate. I too get very queasy at blood, just thinking about it squicks me out. I also have experienced this in school (I was a freshman in high school), but the difference with me is that I ACTUALLY fainted and there was no sexy vampire there to rescue me. There was just the principal and the school nurse trying to ask me what I’d had to eat that morning (practically nothing, but I didn’t tell them that) and trying to hint to me that maybe I was pregnant. The school cops also showed up, thinking maybe I’d overdosed on drugs (The school I went to didn’t really have the most wholesome students, in case you didn’t pick up on that).

1. Do you personally relate to Bella feeling queasy around blood?

Why, yes, yes I do.

2. Were you afraid for Bella when Edward scooped her up? Did you think the fact that there was blood around might endanger her?

No, I wasn’t scared for her. I was more like extremely jealous.

3. Edward says that Bella doesn’t seem like a junior in high school. Do you agree or disagree with that assessment?

Yes, completely. Bella is very mature for her age, and I imagine this was a surprise to Edward who had been around countless high school students his entire existence.

4. What did you think about Edward’s demeanor this chapter? How is it different than in the previous chapters?

I think that this chapter showed just really how much he cared about Bella, even though he didn’t want her to know. It especially shows when he helped Bella when she was sick. He wanted to make sure she was ok.

-Whitley

1. Do you personally relate to Bella feeling queasy around blood?

Yes, I too am a pansy around blood… and even the potential showing of blood.

2. Were you afraid for Bella when Edward scooped her up? Did you think the fact that their was blood around might endanger her?

Nope, because Edward loves her!

3. Edward says that Bella doesn’t seem like a junior in high school. Do you agree or disagree with that assessment?

Well, she doesn’t care about normal high school things.  But then again, she does because like high school juniors I knew, she is obsessed with a boy.

4. What did you think about Edward’s demeanor this chapter? How is it different than in the previous chapters?

I thought that this chapter showed how much Edward felt about Bella by the way he took care of her while she was sick, like I take care of Whitley!  (love you babe)

Thanks to Lauren’s Bite, the Twilight Lexicon forums, and the Lexicon member Alphie for these questions.

Chapter Discussions: Twilight, Chapter Four – Invitations

Oh so conflicted...

Oh so conflicted...

It’s time for another Chapter Discussions post over Twilight. This time it’s Chapter Four, Invitations. These questions come from the hilarious blog Lauren’s Bite and the Twilight Lexicon forums.

1. Why do you think Bella doesn’t want to go to the spring dance? She could easily just have said to anyone, “Let’s just go as friends”. Why is it that from day one, none of the boys appealed to her?

I know none of the boys appealed to her because she had seen Edward the first day of school. After that, who could compare to him? I don’t think she could even have gone with anyone else even as friends because she was so attached to Edward even at the beginning.

2. Bella asks Edward if he has multiple personality disorder because he either seems to be overly friendly or sarcastic moments apart. To what did you attribute Edward’s odd behavior?

I knew Edward was treating Bella that way because he was having conflicting feelings about her. He wanted to be around her, she was all he could think of, but he also knows for sure that to give in to what he wants and be with her would mean bad things for Bella. He’s trying to decide to keep her close or push her away.

-Whitley

1. Why do you think Bella doesn’t want to go to the spring dance? She could easily just have said to anyone, “Let’s just go as friends”. Why is it that from day one, none of the boys appealed to her?

This is almost a two part analysis.  Bella was way more mature than any of the children at her school.  Edward and she were on similar maturity levels, and it only makes since to like him, and not the other boys.

2. Bella asks Edward if he has multiple personality disorder because he either seems to be overly friendly or sarcastic moments apart. To what did you attribute Edward’s odd behavior?

Being a boy, I know why guys play like they hate y0u, then also a few minutes later, they like you.  It was pretty simple to me why he was acting like that, even though i thought it was pretty childish… like something i would do. He didn’t want to admit he liked her.

Chapter Disscussions: Twilight, Chapter Three – Phenomenon

"...the van shuddered to a stop a foot from my face..."“…the van shuddered to a stop a foot from my face…”

Ok guys, we are on to one of my favorite chapters in the whole series. This is the point where everything between Edward and Bella changed. I love the title of this one, Phenomenon. Reading it for the first time gave me a little thrill because I could tell that something amazing was going to happening when I read on. I still feel that same excitement when I read this chapter now.

Once again, thanks to the awesome blog Lauren’s Bite and the forums at Twilight Lexicon!

1. Bella is surprised and touched that Charlie put snow chains on her truck because she isn’t used to people taking care of her. Later on we know that Renee called Bella hysterical to have her come home yet Renee wasn’t in Phoenix. Given all of this what were your impressions of Renee?

What I got from that is that Renee definitely loves Bella, and wants her to be safe, but she was so flighty that she never put real thought or action into how to actually take care of Bella. Charlie loves her the same amount, he’s just a more practical person.

2. The accident is the first great action scene in the book. Did you get all the details right in your head the first time, or did you realize you missed finer points when Bella thinks about the accident later?

I had to re-read the actual accident part several times so I could get all the details right in my head. I also learned a few things when Bella was thinking about it later.

3. What did you think about Charlie’s response to the accident?

I thought he was a little over concerned, but I think about when I have kids, and if any of them almost got crushed by a van, I would probably react the same way too. I also wasn’t surprised when he called Renee. In the movie, when he threatened to take away Tyler’s licence, I thought that was pretty funny.

4. This is the first time we meet Carlisle. What were your first impressions

I thought he sounded dreamy of course, and I could tell he knew about Edward saving her, and he didn’t know what to think about that yet.

5. Did Edward’s cool and even sarcastic comments regarding the accident intrigue you or frighten you?

I knew he was mad at himself for saving her, but he didn’t regret it either. He was upset with her in a way like, “Look what you made me do.” because he wanted to deny that he had a strong need to save her. I also knew he was hoping she would brush it off and forget about it, so he tried to act cold toward her so she wouldn’t ask him any more questions about it. Needless to say, I was intrigued.

We were a little late on posting this, so we will do another Chapter Discussion very soon!

-Whitley

Alrighty, time for round 3, or as the French say “tres”.

1. Bella is surprised and touched that Charlie put snow chains on her truck because she isn’t used to people taking care of her. Later on we know that Renee called Bella hysterical to have her come home yet Renee wasn’t in Phoenix. Given all of this what were your impressions of Renee?

Renee doesn’t think things through.  Charlie does, plain and simple.

2. The accident is the first great action scene in the book. Did you get all the details right in your head the first time, or did you realize you missed finer points when Bella thinks about the accident later?

I think I got it all the first read through, but I’m about to be re-reading, so maybe I will pick something up that is new.

3. What did you think about Charlie’s response to the accident?

He acted exactly as I would if my daughter was in the same situation.  Freaked out, pissed, and very concerned.

4. This is the first time we meet Carlisle. What were your first impressions?

BAD ASS.  He is the essence of cool.  I feel that if the book was about his life, the following would still be just as great as it is with Bella and Edward.

5. Did Edward’s cool and even sarcastic comments regarding the accident intrigue you or frighten you?

I understood his comments, he was pissed, he wished he could have had her killed.  Think about Midnight Sun for a moment.  “I knew what had to happen now. The girl would have to come sit beside me, and I would have to kill her.” This was only days before he was stopping a van from squishing her.  It is probably best that he did save her, though.  He might have gone for her blood once it had spilled… Jasper too.

Thanks for reading.

Chapter Disscusions: Twilight, Chapter Two – Open Book

I wish Edward was my lab partner

I wish Edward was my lab partner

It’s time for another Chapter Discussion over my favorite book in the series, Twilight. Remember, if you want to answer these questions yourself, you can post it on y0ur own blog and let us know, or you can reply in the comments.

1. Where did you think Edward had gone off to at the start of the chapter and why did you think he had vanished?

I wasn’t sure where he had gone, but I was VERY disappointed he wasn’t there. The book seemed to drag on with him gone. I knew it had something to do with his reaction to Bella though.

2. We learn a few things about Bella’s parents in this chapter. Charlie can’t cook – Renee is rather needy and so on. What does this tell us about Bella as an individual?

Bella had to grow up pretty fast in order to take care of her mother, but she doesn’t mind taking care of her family. She takes on the cooking at Charlie’s because she wants to.

3. What was your reaction to the polite way Edward treated Bella when he returned? Did you think he was putting on a show? How did it change your thoughts about his initial reaction to her?

When Edward came back and he was so nice to her, I was like *swoon*. Guys these days are not like that. It was was so sweet how he formally introduced himself to her. I didn’t think he was putting on a show, I just knew that whatever had been bothering him was fixed now. I was still as confused as Bella as to what that was.

4. What was your first explanation for the change in Edward’s eye color?

With him being a vampire, I was sure it had something to do with his thrist level. I knew he probably was thirsty that first day, but I wasn’t sure why he hadn’t reacted that way to anyone else, just Bella. But I thought he sounded HOT with the gold colored eyes!

Thanks again to Lauren’s Bite and Twilight Lexicon for the questions!

– Whitley

1. Where did you think Edward had gone off to at the start of the chapter and why did you think he had vanished?

Whitley had told me, so there was no guessing involved ;).

2. We learn a few things about Bella’s parents in this chapter. Charlie can’t cook – Renee is rather needy and so on. What does this tell us about Bella as an individual?

It shows Bella’s maturity.  She is older than her years.

3. What was your reaction to the polite way Edward treated Bella when he returned? Did you think he was putting on a show? How did it change your thoughts about his initial reaction to her?

As the story had been spoiled I knew the reason.

4. What was your first explanation for the change in Edward’s eye color?

I thought back to other vampire stories where faces changed (Whedon), and knew it had to do with the fact that he was more civil with the lighter eyes.  I wish my eyes were golden…

But there you have it, chapter 2.  Thanks for reading!

Chapter Discussions: Twilight, Chapter One – First Sight

Whos that sexy bitch sitting all alone? You know that was Bellas first thought.

"Who's that sexy bitch sitting all alone?" You know that was Bella's first thought.

So I was reading the marvelous blog Lauren’s Bite written by a wonderful lady named (duh, what else?) Lauren and through her, I learned that the Twilight Lexicon has a place where they have discussion questions for each chapter in the series. Nothing could be better to me, since I dearly love to discuss Twilight. With thanks to them, we have decided to post our answers here, and if you want to reply with your own, you can leave them in our comments, or on your own blog (and do check out The Lexicon and Lauren’s blog, they DID give me the idea. Thanks for being so brilliant, guys!)

Ok, let’s get started!

1. Did you relate to Bella right away? If so, what part of her did you identify with?

I related to Bella in a few ways. I moved about six times when I was in school, so I definitely know what it is like to be the new kid in school, the one everyone wants to get a look at. I’m also very shy, and I hate having tons of attention on me. My parents are divorced too, so I know what it’s like to be shuffled around sometimes.

2. What were your first impressions of Renee and Charlie?

I thought Renee was kinda irresponsible. Bella was always the one taking care of her, so I didn’t think she was very mature. I liked Charlie immediately, you can tell he really loves Bella in the way he was so excited for her return but he tried to hide it. He wanted to give her the space she needed. (“One of the best things about Charlie is he doesn’t hover.”- Twilight, pg 9*) I also thought Renee was kind of mean for walking out on Charlie. So I liked him better than Renee immediately.

3. What were your first impressions of the friends Bella meets?

I thought that Eric was a little too eager, like Mike was later. Jessica came off as bitchy and shallow, especially when she was talking about the Cullens, and I liked Angela right away.

4. Were you scared or intrigued by Edward?

I was kinda like, wtf? when I first read about his reaction. My mom had told me a basic synopsis of the book before, so I knew he was a vampire, but I didn’t know what was going on with him. But I was definitely intrigued.

5. What did you think of Edward’s odd behavior?

I knew it must have something to do with being a vampire, but I didn’t know exactly what it was. When he was so angry and sitting next to Bella the entire time, I was holding my breath while I was reading. I was sure it was nothing good.

6. Did this chapter hook you on the book or were you still trying to see what the fuss was?

I was going to read the book no matter what, just to see how it was different than the movie, but I  would have kept reading for sure if I didn’t have that reason.

Ok, so that was fun! Thank you again to Lauren, and member Sydflower at Twilight Lexicon for these questions and the idea.

-Whitley

So these questions aren’t really meant for a guy, as I’m sure I am one of the only few hundred or so who would openly admit to reading and furthermore enjoying the books ;).  Here it goes.

1. Did you relate to Bella right away? If so, what part of her did you identify with?

My life is probably the exact opposite of Bella, except for the teen-aged awkwardness that I still have :).

2. What were your first impressions of Renee and Charlie?

I will have to agree with Whitley on the subject of Renee, she is horribly immature, irresponsible… BUT she is also a great friend in ways the Charlie could never be.  Charlie on the other hand, was the older male Bella.  He made perfect sense to be her father.

3. What were your first impressions of the friends Bella meets?

Two words – FREAKIN’ ANNOYING… except for Angela.  They were the people I tried as hard as I could to stay away from in High School.

4. Were you scared or intrigued by Edward?

When I first saw the movie, I already knew he was a vampire, so I knew I couldn’t take him, but I would have probably said something to him, like, “Hey F*ckface, quit staring…”  which would the be followed by me getting my butt kicked all over the cafeteria.

5. What did you think of Edward’s odd behavior?

To be honest, I though it was a little creepy how offsetting Bella was to him.  I understand why she felt he hated her.  Hell if I were her and had some one that angry looking at me, I wouldn’t return to school… EVER.

unintendedchoice from Letters To Twilight said it best: “…Rob Pattinson looks to be jizzing in his pants…”

6. Did this chapter hook you on the book or were you still trying to see what the fuss was?

It was the first chapter of her first book, I was a little skeptical, and still didn’t see what all this hub-bub was all about.

Well that was about it for chapter 1 book 1, the first sight into the Twiverse.
